59.94p 4k XAVC to 23.976
I’m working on a new MBP running Resolve Lite 10.0 on Mavericks OS. I’m attempting to create Pro Res HD dailies from my XAVC 4k source. The project, timeline, and output are all set at 23.976 and my source footage is 59.94p. When I import the footage to the media pool I get a dialog asking if I’d like to change the timeline/project setting to match the clip setting, and I select “don’t change”.
Typically, when we run this process on our iMac workstation it simply conforms the source frame rate to the project frame rate, but every time I run it on my MBP it spits out a mov at 59.94. Our iMac workstation is running the full version of Resolve and, as I mentioned, the nMBP is running Lite. Anything obvious that I might be missing?

Just curious, why do you shoot 59.94 fps if you only want 23.976?

Eric Liner, I’m having the same problem! 59.94 in resolve project with the timeline settings set to 23.98 for slo mo and when i go to render out ProRes 422s the result is all in 59.94! did you figure it out? Use a different piece of software? help!

I believe if you’ve shot at 59.97 but need to be at 23.98, you’re going to see a lot of motion interpolation artifacts. The only way I know to get around that is to use a Snell & Wilcox Alchemist or a BMD Teranex, but even then it’s not perfect.
It is possible to do the opposite: take a 23.98 master and convert it to 59.97i. And that’s done all the time for U.S. broadcast.

60p played back at 24 does not need interpolation, right? it’s slo mo. The other way around, yes. Can I not record Xavc 60p on an A7s, ingest it into Resolve (for some reason it shows up at 59.94) and then drop it into a 23.98 timeline (in master settings) and play it back/transcode it in 23.98 for 60p slo mo?

correct. you just need to make sure that you’ve set up your resolve project setting to conform all video to the project framerate. i’m not a resolve power user, so can’t tell you the exact wording as i don’t have it open right now, but it’s fairly straightforward. obviously sync will be an issue, but if you’re using it to overcrank, that’s probably not a concern. if you’re struggling with this approach, you could consider using S&Q motion with sony cameras and record 1-60fps with a frame frequency of 23.98. no need to convert frame rate for slo-mo playback in this case.
Just FYI, this was an old post– prior to the Sony F55 implementing S&Q– and changing the camera’s base frequency was the only means of overcranking at the time. Now I typically employ S&Q.

Hi Eric,
Something changed along the way with either Sony or Resolve in terms of the way they handle frame rates for slo-mo. It’s easy to do what you want though, I do it all the time.
In the media page, select all the clips you want to play back at 23.976. Right click and choose “clip attributes”. There’s a drop-down for video frame rate. Just change it to 23.976 (make sure the check-box is checked next to the frame rate). Hit “ok” and you’re good to go. Drop all those clips in a 23.976 timeline and render out your dailies. As long as you edit from your converted dailies and conform back to your adjusted clips everything will work great.
