59.94 vs. 60: does that .06 matter?
For me it’s been an exclusively 23.98 and 29.97 world until now, and I have some confusion about the above frame rates.
I’m starting to edit a video art project shot at 59.94 1080 on DSLR (original clips h264, I converted to ProRes standard preserving frame rate and dimensions).
The artist wants to carry this frame rate through to exhibition. I’ve seen their pre-shoot tests of 23.98 and 29.97 frame rates, and shooting 59.94 definitely made a difference, it’s buttery smooth by comparison.
The gallery has a full HD projector with a “refresh rate” capability of 24/30/50/60 at 1080p via HDMI. The media player box the gallery uses to loop an h264 version of the completed video via HDMI is supposedly also capable of 60 output (they’re checking).
But— when I converted the original clips to ProRes in Compressor 4 there was not a frame rate choice for 60; the highest was 59.94, so that’s the time base with which I’m starting the edit.
Are those projector specs rounding off 59.94 to 60? Might I somehow somewhere see a problem delivering a 59.94 program?

It’s rounding off. Notice that it said “24/30/50/60?” That means “23.98/29.97/50/59.94.” But that’s too technical looking, so it simplifies. Like we do when we say 24p…that means 23.98.

OK, great. That’s a relief. Then it’s 59.94– uhm, I mean, 60 all the way!

So are Blu-rays 23.976 also, or 24p. Because film is 24p not 23.976p.
