Please pardon my ignorance on this one. Recently we upgraded from the analog SD world with a resolution of just 720×480 29.97. Now we are at a point where production needs to be 1280×720 59.94 Progressive.

My question is in regards to After Effects, for a progressive image, does it matter if I’m rendering in 29.97 or 59.94? In Premiere, yes that would matter.

Some issues we are having is that clips in a 29.97 rate play twice as fast in the 59.94 project. Since my news room is still SD I’m having to contend with this for some projects.

    Thank you

    Yikes, NTSC standards are messy!

But yeah, Premiere is usually pretty sane with its handling of different framerates on a timeline. It should playback uniformly, adding extra frames to keep up (with the option to blend them during export). Check your prefs and project settings.

Why the framerate increase in the first place, out of curiosity? I understand the increase in resolution, but what’s the advantage of going to 59.94?

Which is why if I’m working in a 1280×720 59.94p project with 720×480 29.97 clips then I need to know what is the best practice.

Don’t forget to double check your upper/lower field dominance if you are exporting footage to/from After Effects. Scaling vs. traditional HD up conversion could add more problems if the footage isn’t interpreted properly, but both apps will give you Interpret Footage options.
