59.94 NDF layoff going 8 frames out of sync
Hi All,
OS 10.4.11, FCP 6.0.2, QT 7.3, Kona 3
Sequence @ 29.97, 1080i, 1920×1080 Square, Apple ProRes
Tape @ 59.94, 1080i
Sync generated by Ensemble Designs 5400 @ 1080i/59.94We’re laying out an hour long program starting at 00:58:30:00 with 1 minute of bars. The symptom was that we were finding on layback to tape that the bars would continue to 00:59:30:08. From that point on all video would be delayed by 8 frames. Audio continued on time.
We put a timecode reader on the bars to see if there were duplicated frames at the head. There weren’t, but what we found was odd… The first 2 seconds of video ran at 25fps when laid to tape. I mean that at 00:58:31:00, the timecode on the bars read 00:58:30:25. At 00:59:32:00, the timecode on the bars read 00:58:31:22. From that point on, the 8 second offset stayed throughout the program.
Our very temporary workaround was to add 5 seconds of slug at the head of the sequence, delay the audio tracks by 8 frames, and print to tape starting at 00:58:24:22.
I’m putting this out there to see if anybody else has seen anything like this, and in the hopes that somebody can get it to AJA or Apple to try to replicate it.
