50p in 50p out h.264?
I have a DVCPROHD720 50p sequence. I’ve opted for 50p as i need the video to have a very ‘live’ feel.
Now i’m trying to compress with h.264. However, in the fps options, there doesnt seem to be an option for 50 (29.97 being the max). I tried exporting 25fps, but the movie is choppy and not nice.
Am I looking in the wrong place? Is this workflow the best way to keep the ‘live’ feel of my video?

What are the export settings? You probably need to increase the Level. Select at least L3.2 for a 1280×720-50p sequence. Please refer to H.264 Levels for more information.

Thanks for the link. Where do I find what level h.264 I’m using? Could you reccomend any presets as a good start?

What software are you using? Please post a screen capture of your export settings.
Recommendations on presets and settings require more information on the intended use for the encoded file, any known delivery requirements, and the encoding software.

Thanks for your reply Ivan. Sorry for not being clearer earlier. I am working with FCP7 and Compressor.
The compressor settings I was trying were ‘h.264 for apple devices’. Bit rate around 1000kbps.
Delivery is a multimedia file, framed to 640×360. This is for easy and quick internet distrubtion. However, as I mentioned, I still want to retain the 50fps live feel. It is quite likely the file will end up being displayed on a 576i (pal land) projector.Sorry I’m away from the workstation so I can’t provide screen shots at the moment.

I’m going off my experience with QuickTime Pro, but I believe it’s the same setup as Compressor.
– To specify 50fps, choose Custom in the Frame Rate selector and manually enter 50.
– It might be better to use H.264/MP4 for online viewing unless you plan to post to sites like YouTube or Vimeo that re-encode the uploaded file. If the latter, consider using a higher bitrate.
– Baseline Profile and Single-Pass encoding offer greater compatibility. Main Profile and Multi-Pass encoding provide better compression.
– 1000 kbps might be too low for 50 fps. Try 1500 kbps and go up or down from there, if required.
– Set Key Frame distance to Automatic.
– Enable Streaming for online viewing.
