I’m running fcp 5.0.4 on a Dual 2.7Ghz G5, with Black Magic HD Pro card. I’m about to install
FCS 2 but have a question: Will I still be able to open a project file created in 5.0.4 ?

    thanks,

    Yes you will

I was in the same boat as you but with a Quad G5.

I would recommend you save a copy of your fcp5 projects though
since fcp 6 will want to update them. (just in case you revert)

    Thanks Boris,

So, I take it that FCP will update the project file to an fcp 6 format.

I’ve got several in-progress projects (5.0.4) that have un-comp 10 bit HD footage with
imported overlay graphics and titles created in fcp. I’ve used the 3-way color corrector and
several of “Joe’s Filters” on the sequnces in question…..

Do you think that all of that will “make it” through when fcp updates the project file ?

(I’m assuming that I’ll probably have to re-render everything)

    Steve,

This is precisely the type of situation that calls for cloning your system drive before an upgrade. Every existing project is different. Some come in just fine, while others may lose some things such as filters or speed changes that might make you think twice about upgrading after the fact. A clone will allow you to go back if necessary, as you can simply boot to the clone if necessary.

Excellent advice David…thank you. That will give me a nice stable place to return to
    if things go poorly.

Is there an “Apple Approved” way to do it….or should I just install another internal h.d.
and copy everything over to it ?

Actually, I just found, on Ken Stone’s website, an application called “Carbon Copy Cloner”
by Mike Bombich which will do just what I need. Thanks again for the advice Boris and David.

I would have told you to use Carbon Copy Cloner.

Oh, and test your clone after it finishes to make sure it boots. You can search ths forum for instructions on that if you don’t know how, I think I’ve posted it a zillion times.
