I’m trying to render a 5 sec. animation right now and it’s the first real render I’ve done because frankly the C4D render system is pretty strange to me. I am trying to render a TIFF sequence since rendering a QuickTime preview looked like CRAP. I am using GI, AO, and MoGraph2 physics with a number of speheres. It’s about 2.5 min to render a full res frame to Picture Viewer, so I assume 2.5 min x 166 frames = about 8-9 hours. Fine, I can set it and come back in the morning, but I let mine rip and a few days later it was at 86 hours and just then starting the actual full frames after 12 passes before hand. What the heck did I accidentally check that’s making it do 12 super super long passes where it’s doing just light or something? Could someone please recommend some good general settings to render a good looking animation? I have been using Greyscale Gorilla’s render settings as a reference, but apparently I missed something because his doesn’t appear to do any passes, just whole frames. Thanks so much to anyone who can help. Because of the length of time these take I’ve only rendered 1 preview, as QuickTime, which, as I said, looked AWFUL (I didn’t even know to hit SHIFT + R until I did a lot of digging, not sure why I am making this so difficult!).

It is most likely GI that is causing your problems…although using GI and AO in combination will definitely kill your render. Try turning GI off and render a few frames. You should see a significant speed increase. You can adjust the settings of GI to help speed up your render as well…

Are you using lights as well? If so if you have them set to volumetric, that will slow your render down as well.

Yeah, I turned off volumetric, but I am planning to leave AO and GI on. I’m using a Core I7 975 extreme and a good geforce graphics card that benchmarks really high in cinebench, so it’s not my machine. What settings do you recommend in GI and AO? Nick Campbell’s renders are fast with them both on and what I thought were comparable setting, I’m sure his Mac’s better than my PC but not toooo substantially I wouldn’t think. Where else can I sacrifice?
