5 & 4.5 simultaneously
For anybody nervous about upgrading from 4.5 to 5 it is possible to upgrade and leave 4.5 where it is.
If you change the serial number on your installed 4.5 from your legit number to a, er, not so reputable serial, the upgrade will not overwrite it.
Instead it will ask you for your v4.5 serial on which you enter your legit number and it will proceed to install v5 but leave 4.5 intact.
Otherwise, the upgrade does not stop to ask for the previous number but just overwrites the previous installation.
Well, it worked for me anyway.
Obviously, if you do not have a legit serial at all the upgrade installaton will stall at the first fence.

To change the serial:
Trash the file:
/Library/Application Support/ProApps/Final Cut Pro System ID
FCP will ask for a serial on next startup.

I just renamed Final Cut Pro HD to Final Cut Pro HD 4.5 under applications and installed Final Cut Pro 5 no problems no headaches both available to use and being used for over a week now.
