Half of my original footage was shot in 4K and since I don’t have the horsepower to edit in 4K I’m assuming the best step is to convert 4K to HD before editing.

What is the best workflow and tool to accomplish this keeping the quality very high?

Would 4K to 2K be another choice?

    Thanks!

The built-in proxy mode of FCPX would be thr most efficient method- worth a google if you’re unfamiliar.

[Larry Watts] “since I don’t have the horsepower to edit in 4K”

What machine are we talking about here? Because I’ve even edited (optimized) 4K on a Mac Mini before with no issues.

No. Definitely not. As Noah said, a proxy workflow is what you’ll want to look into. A simple one-click solution with Final Cut Pro X. No mucking about with external transcodes needed.
