I doubt it will be possible with blu-ray player manufactured from 2014 and past. Last year UltraHD Blu-ray standard (4K blu-ray player) was officially announced. I understand you will need an HDMI connection version 2 in order to take advantage of the full bandwidth and requirements of 4K signal. Just like some DVD players could play HD recorded to DVD disc, maybe some HD blu-ray player will be able to play UHD movies from a blu-ray disc at some point. In 2015 Samsung announced the first UHD player but I don’t believe it is on the shelf anywhere yet. At CES 2016 more manufacturers presented new players.
Today if you need to play a 4K movie, your best bet is from a hard drive with enough compression/bandwidth to sustain the data rate.
