I’m a lifelong PR and AE editor and VFX artist who was PC at the very beginning and have since been mac and absolutely loving the stability and lack of need for maintenance/antivirus/driver updates etc.

My 2011 27″ imac is on its last legs and definitely struggles to edit 4K.

I’d like to make the step 7 years into the future (the present technology) and the apple store team had me drooling over the new imac pro until I saw the $5K price.

I’ve been doing a ton of youtube/forum research comparing the imac pro to custom PC’s etc.

Then I found an amazing deal on the imac pro base model for apx $4,000.

Meanwhile my research on custom PC’s led me to this ‘$1,6000 i8700K liquid cooled+1070 which paired with a 4k monitor is apx $2,000.

My question to those experienced with AE, PR mac and PC is will my $2,000 saved be worth the transition to PC? Or is the imac pro for this deal well worth the money and far enough superior to the PC.

    Thanks!

I use a few PCs for Maya and sometimes as a backup for AE/PPr/Resolve.
I avoid the internet with all PCs too many things go wrong.
However, I love my nMP and about to order a base iMac Pro.
Overall a great Motion/Graphics design environment.

Great question Dave, and the answer is to my semi-surprise 4k prores is just barely usable. Playback only drops a few frames. As soon as I add effects though it chokes.
