4K and Mac HDMI
More a Mac question than FCPX, but this forum seems about as good as any. Does anyone know whether the HDMI from a 2013 Mac Pro or a new iMac Pro (via a TB3-to-HDMI adapter) will support 4K/UHD to a 4K prosumer TV/monitor display? This would be using the a/v output signal from FCPX and/or Premiere Pro. I know HD is fine and I also know BMD and AJA make 4K devices, but I’m looking for a simpler solution in this case. TIA.

I thought the 2013 Mac Pro had HDMI 2.0 with 4K support, and since one of the FCPX updates a couple of years ago, FCPX read it as an A/V output. I’m pretty sure I connected 4K monitors to it in the past (but it’s been a while ago)

You can get UHD (or 4k) 24, 25, or 30p to a consumer set, yes. iMac Pro may get you higher frame rates. You can see I can choose between AJA and the HDMI here:

There are Sony OLED consumer sets around here, and even 2013 rMBP can send 4k them out of the built-in HDMI

Sorry, for the Pr screen grab, the 4k out to the Sony monitor is the “Adobe Monitor 2” option even though the T-Tap is selected.

I’ve used it on 2012 iMac via TB2 to HDMI cable. I don’t know about the resolution, but in comparing the look from the HDMI vs BMD or AJA the HDMI out was never for anything but a quick way to view on a screen. The gamma was totally different and the colors were oversaturated. At the time it didn’t support interlacing and was 8 bit as well. Cant remember if it carried audio which helps keep audio in sync with picture by hooking up speakers to the audio output on my Flanders monitor. Unless things have changed I wouldn’t use it for color. It was also just kind of annoying how switching apps turned it back to a desktop and/or your mouse could still disappear to the AV out screen even though it was dedicated video. I’ll take a BMD or AJA any day. Prefer BMD geese days.
