Activity Forums Apple Final Cut Pro Legacy 4.5 on tiger

Here is a dumb question. Can I upgrade the OS to Tiger and still use FCP 4.5? We are in mid project.

Our system is basically not working. Tech says it is our OS which is 10.3.8. Our quicktime now is 6.5.2. Will quicktime 7 cause problems with our projects?

    Thanks.

Okay never mind about 4.5 on Tiger. There are no drivers for our Black Magic card for FCP 4.5 and OS 10.4. So we are stuck without a working system. I will have to upgrade to FCP 5 in mid project. Can I do that? YIKES

What about your OS isn’t working, and could you try 10.3.9 first?

    I’m still on 4.5 and 10.3.9. It’s so solid!

Upgrading mid-project is risky. It’s been done, but with widely varying success rates. Even upgrading to 10.3.9 is risky. But if you can’t get anything done with the system as it is currently, the risk is probably worth it.

    I agree with Debe.
I wouldn’t upgrade to Tiger or Quickktime 7 in
mid project. As far as your system not working, if you could
post some details perhaps we could help you get it
running better. Let us know your setup.

My experience with Tiger and FCP5 tells me if you can
put off the upgrades for any reason, you may be better off.

There is not a driver for our Black magic card Duallink HD Pro that works for 10.3.9. They suggest either 10.3.8 or going to Tiger. That is why we are stuck. Black Magic does not have a driver that supports 10.3.9.

    This sucks.

With your DeckLink, you have two options.

1st. Stick with FCP 4.5 Decklink 4.8.1 Driver, QuickTime 6.5.2 and Mac OS 10.3.8
2nd Upgrade to FCP 5, OS 10.4, and update Decklink driver 5.0

Contact Scott or Matt at 800-305-2163, they can really help you out.

One thing you might consider that would allow you to have
your cake and eat it too, as my mom used to say:

    – Clone your OS/Applications (boot) drive to a firewire drive.
I use SuperDuper for that. https://www.shirt-pocket.com
You want nothing else to be on that drive but what you are cloning to it.
    – Restart from your firewire drive.
    – On your old OS drive, erase and create two partitions.
One will be for Tiger and one will be for your old OS/Applications
    drive.
    – Clone the firewire drive over to one of the new partitions.
    – Restart from that new partition with OS 10.3.8 (your old system).
    – Now do a clean install of Tiger into the other partition. During the install
process Tiger will ask you if you want to copy over your
apps and user info from the old OS and you will answer yes.
When it’s all done, you will have two completely separate
systems/applications drive partitions. On the Tiger one,
use software update to get the most recent files for all the
stuff you just installed. There are many many of them. Then
do your Blackmagic upgrades etc. Run FCP4.5 from that partition.
See what happens. If it’s trouble, restart using the other partition
    with 10.3.8.

Tech is wrong on that one. FCP 4.5 is the most stable in my experience running on OS 10.3.8.
