Any help would be much appreciated…

I have a color corrected 4:4:4 2048×1024 sequence (shot on red – ran through Color 1.5) and now will output to HDCAM (not SR).Should I render out a new QT in FCP (7) at 4:2:2 res and output that or can I play my sequence as is and not worry about conversions – leaving it to the Kona/FCP?

Running 8 Core with Kona 3.

    Thanks

I’ve never worked in this kind of workflow, but I think that if the KONA can do it, let the KONA do it.

    Ok
the Kona3 can handle this but note that your video will end up letterboxed on the digital output, which on HDCam is 8bit 3.1.1 so the 4:4:4 file is a bit much for your setup.

The K3 can handle this in realtime by using the “2K Crop” function and setting the Output to be 4:2:2 HDSDI via the Kona Control panel.

FYI there is a Kona forum also where most of the highend questions like this go.

Thanks! This is pretty much what I thought. I’ll post when done as an update in case other people will do the same thing.

    Emre,

Some of us do this kind of process on a daily basis, you biggest hurdle is that relying on the L&T setup for the default 2:1 aspect ratio in FCP actually hurts more than helps.

Using RedAlert or RedRushes to conform your output prior to editing into something that is simpler to handle and easier to post ( like ProResHQ) can solve most of these problems upfront, especially when you are mastering back to tape, which at best (HDSR) can handle a 10bit 4:4:4 signal. When delivering to other tape formats there is not really a lot to be gained by working beyond 10bit 4:2:2 unless there is heavy color correction or EFX work being done.
