I have a track with muliple clips of video that are in 4:3 aspect ratio. I would like my final product to fill a wide screen tv with 16:9 ratio. Is there any way to make all clips on a track crop to the 16:9? I have only been able to do this by individually going to each clip and changing the aspects. Since I have over an hour of video comprised of aprroximately 100 clips, this would be very time consuming. Is there a better way to do this? Recent upgrade to Vegas 6.0 from 4.0 so still learning. Thanks in advance.

The quickest way to change the properties of multiple clips would be to select the clip which contains the properties you want to copy and right-click and then select copy. Then select the start clip you want to change, move to the end of the range of the clips and press “shift” and then select the last of the clips you want to modify – right click and select “Paste event attributes”. This will copy the original clips properties and paste them to those you have selected.

Another way of selecting all the clips would be first copying the fist clip – then click the start clip of the series to change and then right-click and choose “Select Events to End” which will select all the remaining clips on that track – same thing – right-click and slect “Paste event attributes”.

A further option would be to simply render the project to 16:9 by selecting the aspect ratio in the custom settings/video for “Render As”

    Cheers

Thanks for the information, I will try it out. As far as rendering, I did what you reccomended, but all I got was a tall and thin version that still was in 4:3 ratio. This is why I was trying to figure out another way to get my rendered product to 16:9.

You can drop a mask into the topmost track, or you can bring the whole project as a veg into a new project and apply the Pan/ Crop lettbox mask to the whole thing.

I am new and not sure how to do the mask that you are referring to. What do you think is the simpelest thing for me to do to get my final product 16:9?

‘What do you think is the simpelest thing for me to do to get my final product 16:9?’

Set your project preferences to widescreen. Pan-crop to fill 16:9 (you are actually zooming in – and will lose some of the frame top and bottom.) Past that pan-crop attribute to the rest of your clips. Now you have 16×9!

How do I “pass that attribute” to the rest of the clips. That is where I am stuck. The only way I know how to do it is to go individuallly to each clip and I have many clips on a time line.

Select the event from which you want to copy attributes. From the Edit menu, choose Copy. Select the event where you want to apply the copied attributes. From the Edit menu, choose Paste Event Attributes.

Use this procedure to select multiple events that are located next to each other:
Hold the Shift key and click the first and last event on the track that you want to select to paste to. The events, including those between the selected events, are highlighted.

    Select all events
From the Edit menu, choose Select, and then choose Select All from the submenu (or press Ctrl+A) to select all tracks and events in your project. This should be used when you only have one track on the timeline.

Select all events to the end of a track
Right-click an event on the applicable track and choose Select Events to End from the shortcut menu. The event and all subsequent events are selected.

    Cheers

To paste attributes, right-click on the reference event and choose Copy. Then right-click on the target event and choose ‘paste event attributes’. If you have multiple events selected, the attibutes will be applied to all.

Note that you cannot separate attributes, so if the reference event has filters or keyframes, for example, they will be applied as well.

To create a mask, open a paint program and make your bars on top and bottom with transparent in between. Save as a .png file. Then drop it in to a video track above the others and strech it across the whole project.

To use Pan/Crop, choose any of the widescreen presets in the preset dropdown. As I’ve pointed out, you can apply this to a whole project if you drop your veg (project) fle into another timeline.

It’s important to understand that when you desire a true 16×9 picture – you must select a widescreen format to fill the entire 16×9 screen. When people talk about bars on the the top and bottom of picture, they are talking about a letterbox format – which is 4×3 making the footage LOOK 16×9 with the bars. That may be your best option because someone with a widescreen TV can scale the 4×3 letterbox image up to fill their screen. The downside is this: whether it is scaled by the viewer or by you on the timeline (remember, you are essentially zooming in in pan/crop to FILL the 16×9 format) to get 16×9 picture from 4×3 footage – you will lose resolution!
