4:3 or 16:9
I was asked by a company to video some presentations that they want to post on their websites. I watched some videos on their sites and all were in the 4:3 format. Does it make a differece what I use? I always set my Sony cameras to 16:9 for weddings and such. Also, do I need to monitor the footage with scopes to make sure all the colors are broadcast legal. I’ve checked these scopes before, but never paid much attention to them when doing wedding videos. Since I’ve never done this type of job before, I could use some advise. Thanks!

If their website shows all 3×4 video and you haven’t shot the video yet, I would stick to that so you don’t run into unexpected problems. You can play 16×9 videos on the web though if the player supports it or you letterbox it first. You don’t need to use scopes as it’s not being broadcasted from a TV station. If you encode the video to the same format the website uses, usually flash, it should look the same as if you play it with a flash player straight from your computer. Hope this helps. Danny Hays

Did you ask the company that hired you? They may hate the fact that their videos are 4:3 when everyone else is moving to 16:9 and actually want them in 16:9. The point is… you need to ask. You could always shoot 16:9 and crop to 4:3 later which gives you more options.
