Is there a recipe out there to upscale SD, 4:3 Letterbox video to 16:9? I have cropped and scaled up a 4:3 Letterbox video in a 16:9 (Anamorphic) sequence and it looks just as I thought it would, dumpy.

Side note, I need to find a title safe grid for placing fonts when I edit with content that is 4:3 Letterbox. Although my fonts are safe according to 4:3, the placement when blown up to 16:9 is out of “action safe”.

    I love my job!

    Thank you,

    Derek

are you editing SD, or are you upconverting the 4:3 letterbox to HD?

if you’re staying SD, there is really no way that will look good…you are basically stretching the letterbox vertically, and it will never display cleanly…

    what is your final destination?

Okay, you have my attention going to HD, does that make it any better/easier?

You can blow up the SD image to HD but it will never be HD quality. You are starting with only a certain number of pixels of information. Plus, in order to make it fit into 16:9 you have to actually crop out a good chunk of the vertical image, so in the end you’d really have less than you had at SD; it would merely be formatted to fit the HD screen, which I guess is the best you can do working with SD material.

right, it won’t look any better as HD, but it will help retain some resolution as opposed to just cropping to letter box and stretching it for anamorphic…the hardest thing to do is use SD footage as HD, you need a good hardware converter to remap the pixels and convert color space…
i’m going to look at something and get back to you….do you have access to an SR deck, or an 1800?
