I am brand new to working with HDV footage. That said, I am editing an HD program shot in HDV 16:9 format. The final project will have commercial spots embedded which are 4:3. To keep the project looking the same throughout, the broadcaster is requesting that the entire project be submitted to them in 4:3. As far as I can tell, CS3 doesn’t allow me to create a 4:3 HDV project nor export a 16:9 HDV project as a 4:3 HDV file.

Am I missing something or is there another way to achieve this?

All HD video is 16:9, as far as I know. How are they requesting 4:3? Perhaps they want everything to be center-cut safe for 4:3 broadcast?

They simply said that it needed to be submitted in a 4:3 format.

It sounds like you need more details from the broadcaster; I suspect they are broadcasting standard def. See if the have a preference (digiBeta, BetaSP, etc.). Were I doing a similar project, I believe I would work in HD and just keep things safe for a center-crop 4:3. Then crop the edges and output a 4:3 SD master for the broadcaster. That way you still have a HD master should you need one.

They are definitely wanting HD programs but its a new change so maybe they are confused about what is possible and what isn’t. Being new to it myself I wasn’t able to straighten them out. I’ll get back with them and let their tech people sort it out.

    Thanks Jeff

What happens sometimes is some popular shows are still shot in 4:3 with high quality cams, and through the studio switching which does up scaling you have a 4:3 program going out as a pillar boxed 1080 or 720 and simulcasted as 480 DTV, maybe this is what they are trying emulate.
