  • 3rd party plugin problem -unix executable (exec) files

Posted by Dan Martland on December 7, 2007 at 2:41 am

I have a few 3rd party plugins for final cut pro, but for some reason my computer will not accept them as the file type seems to be wrong.
Does anyone happen to know how to make “unix executable (exec)” files readable, so i can install these plugins.
A work friend has an older mac (G4 tower, not an intel like mine) and the plugins work fine for him. Very frustrating!

    Hi,
With the information you are providing I don’t think nobody will be able to help you.
A Unix executable file have only meaning inside the application to which belongs.
Out of that you can try to open it with the Text Edit as a text document.

Thanks for the reply, Well as you can see i really dont know what im talking about when it comes to file types etc.
All i can say is that i have a disk with a load of new plugins but only half of them work.
The files which work looks like a little lego brick (under info- its called a bundle- Universal)
The files which dont work look like a grey rectangle with the word EXEC in the top left corner, theses files wont open. Unix Executable File.
Sorry if this isnt very clear but its quite hard to describe my problem. Annoyingly my friends older computer, G4 tower with an older version of final cut, It works fine for him. I guessing its coz i have a new mac using the intel processor. Who knows. But thanks for replying anyway.
    The plugin is called “Virtix”

    Hai,
You have said your FCP is newer version than your friend’s. Same thing happened to me when I upgraded my FCP 4.1 to FCP 5. Half of my plugins didn’t work. Later I found the recent versions of those plugins and installed them. But before you give up try this. Copy all the Unix executable files into “Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Final Cut pro System Support/Plugins”. If it works, it is fine. Otherwise forget it.

Vitix is an iMovie plugin, isn’t it?
How you used to install Virtix?
Have alook in the web site of Virtix and see if there is a Universal version. That should work in your sytem.

There are a few different versions, one for imovie, one for final cut, onre for after effects etc.
I tried downloading it once again but it seems to be the same file type. Im guessing they havent updated there software in a while.
Thanks for all the help and advice but i might just give up on this one.

What is clear is that the file still being the same file. Is just your computer who read it as a Unix ect. file. Try to open it with the utility “Installer”.

In the “Utilities” inside the Applications folder.
You can try to open it with Simple Text too, to have a look inside. Left click in the file and see if it offers “Show package content”. The file my have a wrong “Finder info” and your sytem do not recognize it.
