  • 3fps – configuration (GTX 285)

Posted by Greg Huson on July 27, 2011 at 1:44 am

Recently reconfigured my resolve system in a different computer.

Macpro 3,1 (2008 dual-quad 3g, 8gig ram)and added the Cubix extender because I wanted to use the Red Rocket card AND have access to my fibre storage, plus local storage-

When I first put it together I had an FX4000 and an FX4800 in the expansion box, along with the RR and the BMD card. I was getting 24fps from red at half-premium, which is what I would expect. However, from ‘simpler’ codecs, like prores, I wasn’t getting 24 fps, even with only one or two nodes.

This configuration included an Nvidia 8800, which I saw somewhere was a problem- so, I reconfigured again!

I traded the 4800 for two GTX285s – so my configuration is more-or-less DaVinci approved:

Slot 4 – raid controller (areca from MAXX, 5-600 MB/s)
    Slot 3 – BMD HD Extreme +
    Slot 2 – Cubix Expander
    Slot 1 – Nvidia 4000

    in Cubix:
    1 – GTX285
    2 – GTX285
    3 – Atto FC 41es (transfer to terrablock, 170 MB/s)
    4 – Red Rocket Card

Now, I’m only getting like 3FPS!! Help!

RedCine-X also crashes on launch (in 64 bit or 32 bit,) when it was working perfectly in the previous configuration, so clearly, something is amiss – If anything sounds familiar or ‘known bad,’ please speak up! Any help appreciated! I haven’t had time to tear it down again – but will dig into it this weekend.

Second question – unable to get both monitors working on Nvidia 4000. Either/or, but not both.

    OSX 10.6.7, NVidia CUDA 4.0.21 GPU 1.6.26.31

Hi Greg, it almost sounds like the Expander is not connected. Why dont you first remove it from the config and see how the system performs with just the Q4000, Decklink and the RAID controller. If that looks fine add the Cubix without the FC card as its bandwidth looks too low. I’m also assuming you have the correct CUDA drivers for your OS.

I pulled the Cubix loose, and Resolve now says there’s no CUDA cards available.
The drivers loaded using the ‘preferences’ pane are
The CUDA driver for mac is 4.0.21, Mac driver 256.01.00.35f05

When I download the drivers from the website, the mac driver is a higher number, but the installer won’t run – simply stating ‘not driver update is needed’

I’m going to try a different graphics card for the GUI.

You need to have the Quadro drivers for 10.6.8 as a supplementary install. This is not the same as CUDA drivers, they are a separate thing.

Nvidia has some specifically for 10.6.8.

If they won’t install, you can right click the installer and find the 3 components and install them individually.

Only 1 display working on Q4000 is standard sign that not running right drivers.

Lion has the Quadro drivers already built in, but SL they are always separate.

Actually running 10.6.7 – That might be the problem, but I doubt it. Upon review of the install guide, the combo should be 10.6.7 with 3.2.17 – and I have the newer driver and the older OS. I’ll update the OS and see if that solves the problem… If not, I’ll try a different graphics card for the GUI

The Nvidia drivers that come in Snow Leopard DO NOT SUPPORT QUADRO.

This is part of the APple/Nvidia/Adobe feud.

    You need to install these:

    https://www.nvidia.com/object/quadro-macosx-256.02.25f01-driver.html

If the installer won’t run, right click and install the packages.

That did it. Thanks! Not sure why I didn’t find that info elsewhere – lifesaver! (I obviously misunderstood what the ‘current’ driver was.) Now getting 24fps off the GUI card (4000) alone in HD. Just reconnected the Cubix – that seems to work, too – still not qetting quite the performance I was expecting, but I’ll tweak a little…

Also, both monitors now working!! Thanks for the help.
