Hi. Im wondering if someone would mind giving me some advice re training and programs I am looking at upgrading to.

First off im a Final cut & Mac newbie…I am purchasing a Mac and Final cut pro and taking courses with the objective to at least edit my own work and hopefully be able to learn enough to expand into freelance work for others. Currently I am a long time user AutoCad user for my business and am looking at taking some courses in 3ds max to enable me to do renderings, walkthroughs and such for my clients. Now..of course AutoCad doesnt run on the Mac (despite some things I have heard re this possibility..at least run well) and 3ds Max doesnt come as Mac software…so…is there any interface here with these skills or programs specifically 3ds Max for what im going to be doing on the Mac? Im trying to make the best and most economical decisions…if i could I would just run all my projects on the Mac but im stuck between two diff worlds here.
So..if anyone can add any insight or suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.

    Chris.

If you are still running AutoCad and that is your core business I’d stay in the PC world and use Adobe Premiere CS3 for your video editing needs. From your post it is hard to see why it would make sense to switch to mac and FCP.

But if you are committed to mac and FCP you can use boot camp to boot windows on your mac or parallels to run windows inside of OSX for your PC app needs. Parallels virtualization most likely would give you a performance hit on renders.

There are 3d apps for Mac, the ones off the top of my head are Maya (also from AutoDesk) and Cinema 4D (which I use). I know Cinema 4D can work with AutoCad when in .dfx. I hope you posted on the 3ds Max, Maya and C4D forums they most likely would give you better answers.

    Thanks for your reply Matt.

One of the reasons for using FCP as opposed to Premiere is that FCP & Mac seems to be the standard for video editing in the area where I live.

Ill check out some of your suggestions.

    Thanks again.
