  3d to editable paths

  I have created a spiral and extruded it. I want to be able to edit the spiral so i maker a EXPAND APPEARANCE command.
  I get white marks now on my shape and it is slightly traansparent in places. See image:

  

  Can any wise member tell me how to make the 3D extrusion editable without destroying it?
