So I used the animation preset spin on circle, or whatever it is called. It’s the one that makes your text layer 3D and puts it on a circular path. Then, I have a pre-keyed video layer that I made 3D. Both are arranged correctly in space, but my camera does not show the text disappearing behind her like it should! Instead, it kind of looks like it is just spinning in front of her, and no amount of moving things around has helped. Any insights?

[Dave LaRonde] “To do what you want, you need to put each text character on its own layer and animate them all in 3D space. The text animation presets only SIMULATE 3D, and since they’re one layer, the text is either in front of the subject or behind the subject. “

This is no longer true in CS3. You can enable per-character 3D text on a layer and use text animators to animate the text in full (AE) 3D.

I just looked at the preset animation referred to and was able to very easily put something in the center of the rotating text.

Are there any 2D layers between your two 3D layers? Anything else we should know about your comp?

No, everything in this comp is 3D, I double checked because that messed it up before. The crazy thing is, it worked at first! So I continued to work (basically it is a bunch of animated text in sequence with a person with alpha channel talking) and when I came back to the part with this effect, it was no longer working. The video layer is in 3D and when I move the camera around, it appears the placement if fine, however, the text that SHOULD be behind my video layer shows up in front of her. Although as I write this, I realize that I have a white solid background that is not 3D. Could this be the problem? Though I’m almost positive I tried turning it 3D and there was no effect.
