I have a camera and two 3d objects. One object is a layer with two masks that make a ring. The other layer is a square.

I want the square to come out of the open ring. Problem is the ring stays on top of the square. Ie: Imagine an open circle and a square coming through the center. My problem is where the square should “mask” the back portion of the circle, to make it appear that it is coming out of the ringthat doesn’t happen. It’s just a square with a ring on top of it. I’ve tride moving them in 3d space but can’t seem to get the square to hide any portion of the square no matter where I move it in 3d space.

Would precomposing the 3d layer with the masks, which make the ring, fix this? I’m looking to better understand how this sort of thing works..

Can you upload a screenshot so I can understand your problem clearly?

A screen shot would help- do you have any 2d layers in between your 3d layers? If so, then your problem comes from that- a 2d layer interrupts the 3d space in AE so 3d layers will not interact with 2d layers in between .

i may have a slide idea what you trying to do, if is like i’m thingking you can use the RING opening as a ” Track Matte ” you need to play with the right Matte to go for what you are looking for.
i did something like that in 3D space in this video (Check 40 sec. into the video)

Hey Isacc, nice 3d work. Yes basically think of a donut in 3d space. I basically ended up using a work around but I’m still slightly perplexed that AE doesn’t natively work in 3d. It needed to be in 3d because I’m exploring other objects w/ the camera in 3d space. I’m used to using 3d Stroke which does this but at my new job they don’t have the trapcode plugins.

Thank you, it was completely done en After Effects Using E3D, going back to topic.
one thing i can think of just right of my mind right now is what i did in that same video i post it.. when the Light Of Bean go throu the clouds.

    – Now is the Ring Created in AE?

i guess a have a few ideas, lemme see if i can put then in practice an let you know or just give you the Project file for you to check it out.

here is one close to what you wrote in the 1st post.

Pretty sure you ring has a alpha channel in the middle so you can do the follow:
    – Draw a mask cutting it in half, (Feather at needed.)
    – Duplicate that layer and inverted the Mask.(same here feather as needed).
    – Move the Square Layer between the Masked Ring Layer (Ring close to Camera will be Top layer and the other bottom layer)

Top Masked Layer – Square Layer – Bottom Masked Layer…
