    Hi guys,

I’m trying to make a solid 3D layer to be reflective sort of like those Apple product white background with subtle product reflections. I’m trying to set up a 3D scene in AE so I have a title standing on a reflective surface with a spot light hitting on it. How can I add a glassy surface to that solid layer in AE? I also want this solid layer to have a bright spot(where the light is hitting) and the title is in the middle of this bright spot.

    Any help is appreciated.

you can’t get raytracing like reflections in ae’s 3d… but you can fake it.

the typical process is just duplicating the layer that you want to relfect, flip it vertically (scale the y -100% — that’s minus 100%), reposition it vertically and adjust the opacity.

here is a tutorial/preset for quick 3d reflections that may help you out. it will show you how to use several effects on one layer to create this effect, then save it as a preset to use over and over again…

here’s another one that adds reflections with refractions

I just checked out the video tutorial. It seems that they’re using a 3rd party plugins called videopilot, correct?

They used a preset called easy reflection, but I can’t find it under my AE plugin.

sorry, it had been a while since i had seen that tutorial, he used to have one that talked about how he created the preset, and also had the preset available for download, but that may have changed…

he created the preset using a couple of standard effects… first is cc repetile, set ‘expand down’ to the hight of the layer (ex: if it was a dv file the ht would be 480) and set the tiling to unfold.

this will give you a mirror image of the layer. to fade it a bit add linear wipe, set the angle to 0, and adjust the other parameters as needed.

then add cc composite and uncheck the rgb only option.

i believe the other tutorial shows the manual approach, duplicating the layer and flipping it, etc… so check that one out… i hope i’m not wrong about it too.

If you click on the “Project” link, you will get all the presets used in the video.
