    Hi
    3D shadows disappearing

For a while now I have had problems with characters loosing their shadows. The lights still have the option on to cast shadows and the characters have all their options to make shadows. I think I am pressing some setting or other but cant pin this down. Sometimes some of the comp has shadows and sometimes none at all and there are about 100 layers of characters (vegetables) doing a conga.

    Thanks in advance Anita

    Thanks for all your help

Also Draft 3D is not activated either in any of the cases.

It seems to be to do with bringing in another 3D nested comp and where ever that comp is the 3D disappears, almost as if it contra undoes the 3d settings for shadows of other layers.

If I turn on and off collapse transformations that makes a difference, but not right. What is the rule for nested comps 3D and 3D shadows?

    Thanks

    Hi Anita,
When you collapse transformations on your nested comp it becomes part of the 3D space of the main comp and uses the lights and shadows from the main comp.

If you do not have collapse transformations turned on, then the nested comp will just appear as a flat 2D layer in your main comp and will use its own lights, shadows and 3D space.

2D layers (including nested 3D comps without the collapse transformations switch on) act as a divider when placed between 3D layers, so the 3D layers above and below a 2D layer will not share the same 3D space.

Also, aside from turning on Cast Shadows in the layers you must also turn on Accepts Shadows on the layers you want the shadows to appear.

    Hope that helps.
