I know the problem (in a short form) effects are 2D and that can give some problems with 3D layers.

    BUT

I have a banner that is translucent. You can see the 3d layers behind it. In order to give it a realistic look I need the 3 layers to look blurred when the banner passes them.
the clipping goes wrong when I have an adjustment layer placed behind the banner (using the banner as alpha track matte) It stands out so the 3D in the foreground also gets the blur.

Any alternatives for having the 3D background behind the flag blur (not using more comps than this one)?

Maybe make this a final step. Pre-render your layers.

Then as a simple composite, perform your adj layers the old skool way you were doing.
