  • 3d raytrace taking FOREVER TO RENDER

Posted by Kevin Gonzales on May 3, 2016 at 9:21 pm

I really don’t understand why 3d ray trace is taking so long to render. I have a six second composition 19 20 x 10 80 at 29.97 and it’s taking almost 20 minutes to render. It’s just one line of text that’s three words. There are two lights no shadows and a very simple camera pan left to right. There’s one shape layer in the composition that’s a star and that’s it.

I’m running windows 10 I’ve got 64 gigs ram at ddr4, my processor is an Intel i7 5930 K at 3.5 GHz. What graphics card is GeForce GTX 980.

Am I missing something as to why this would take so long? Is there a setting I’ve got wrong maybe???

    Thanks.

Cool and thanks. I thought I was about to go crazy. So the 4d light renders faster??

The ray-traced renderer should be able to use that card to make it faster (if you’re using the current version of AE – exactly what version number are you running?)

In your preferences, make sure you check the box to use unsupported cards to accelerate the ray-traced renderer (it’s in the Previews section under GPU Information). Also, if you’re not using a pretty recent update to CC 2015, it won’t be able to use that class of card to accelerate it.

That being said, Dave is right; Adobe has pretty much abandoned the ray-traced renderer in favor of the much more powerful C4D Lite option. 🙂

I would only add to this thread that ray-tracing in general is much, much slower than you are used to with Ae/2.5D. C4D may be faster than Ae’s Ray-Tracing Renderer, but it’s not as fast as simple 2.5D animation, or GPU-based 3D like Video Copilot’s Element 3D or Mettle’s ShapeShifter Ae.

How Much RAM are your Adobe programs allowed to access.

64 GB will do no good if the program is set to use 2 GB.

You should also consider running a hardware monitor while rendering to help spot
    choke points of processing.
