I have a challenge for y’all. Solve this, you save my life!

I’ve seen a couple people complain of this issue, but I’m not sure they explained the problem well enough to illicit a response to the actual problem…

I’m a fairly advanced user of after effects and I’m essentially trying to make after effects be maya. I have built a 3D castle of several hundred surfaces precomposed into different rooms and things that I arranged in the castle and within walls and such. The scene looks great when the camera is close up, but when I move out, it very suddenly behaves as though NONE of my precomposed layers intersect. When this happens, it orders them as though they are 2D layers according to their order in the timeline and the precomposed layers nested within other precomposed layers behave the same way. I tried rendering some frames out to see if it was a preview problem and… nope. Not a preview problem at all. The frames have the same issue.

I’ve tried simply copying the contents of the precomposed layers into the composition such that I have like 300 non precomposed layers, but this makes the problem worse. Still depending on the distance the camera is from the scene, after effects just gives up and ignores its 3D intersection rules…

To recap: if the camera is close, there is no problem, but if the camera zooms out, my 3d layers no longer intersect at all.

I’m currently running on an Intel based mac… 6 gigs of ram… 2.0 core 2 duo processor… I’ve tried enabling and disabling open GL and whatnot… at my wits end here.

Someone… someone please help. This is just. Ah. I’ve poured a year into the production of this film and if this stupid problem keeps it from going anywhere… just… Ah.

Don’t hesitate to send bug reports to aebugs@adobe.com.

I saw something very similar, also in a wildly complex project with multiple collapsed 3D Comps. In this case, intersections do work but the junctures seem to be affected The angle/tilt of the camera is definitely a factor.
It’s worth investigating, and I’ll do just that.

Would it help if I sent you some examples, Adolfo? The file system or some screenshots?

    Yes, it would help.
Screenshots are welcome, but not sufficient per se, since we need something to reproduce and isolate. A project would be welcome.
Note that at this time I don’t know if this can be a bug, a limitation of the design or just a consequence of an operation performed by the user.

While we’re at it, you may want to check:

    · There are no masks applied externally to the Collapsed Pre-Comps.
    · There are no effects applied externally to the Collapsed Pre-Comps.
    · There are no adjustment layers inside the Collapsed Pre-Comps.
    · There are no layer styles applied.

These things are “bin breakers”, ie they break 3D compositing.

Also, make sure there are no strange blend modes inside the Pre-Comps (as Alpha Add, which is very common in this kind of project) since the inner blend modes interact with layers in the parent Comp when collapsed.

I forgot to add my e-mail address in case you want to send the project and screenshots.
