apologies if there’s an obvious answer in the previous postings but i can’t find it…

i’m precomping a layer with a mask, but when i use this precomp as a 3d object with a write-on effect it blurs badly. and if i switch the continiuous rasterization on it just disappears. i’ve turned off the 3d option in the precomp, but that doesn’t help any… so i guess it’s something to do with the rendering order… aside from pre-rendering all my precomps, any ideas how to get around this? (AE 6.5 mac)

    many thanks in advance.

I don’t think pre-rendering will solve your problems. AE’s filtering will still soften your pixels if you get too close to your stuff. The only option is to increase the actual pixel resolution.

so is it the filter that causes the blurriness? the resolution is pretty big.

[scyldb] “so is it the filter that causes the blurriness? the resolution is pretty big.”

It would seem this way. Filtering in AE is nothing more than a simple blur-like smoothing and will soften your image. Have you checked if you are not using excessive DOF or your camera has a very tight lens? this could also cause similar effects.

i’ve switched the DOF off, and changing the camera lense makes no difference. it seems once an object is precomposed, it becomes blurry when in 3d. the same object not precomposed looks fine in 3d. i have to recompose cos i’m applying masks… very wierd…

but thanks for your time anyway, please let me know if you have any other ideas.

Go to your precomp and turn every layer into a 3d layer.
The go to your main comp and activate continous rasterasation.

    This should work.
