Hi there, i was looking to create a revolving single character that is in the center of my work space.

However i can find no way in aftereffects to create a 3d model, such as the letter itself and then by extruding it out.

Therefore i was wondering if there was a way to do this in a simple 3d modeling program such as Google sketchup and importing the model into AE to animate the rotation from there. i have already made some other aspects of the project in the AE workspace, hence why i want to animate the 3d object in it.

Also any plug ins that are available for AE to do this inside the program itself would be very helpful!

    Thanks guys

    Steven

i actually have that plugin installed, however i must have set it up incorrectly, as it made the text look 3d, but when animated a camera around my text it simply animated around it like a 2d layer. Have i done something wrong during the setup?

Yes. It’s one of those effects that basically makes a movie of a 3D object that plays on one of AE’s layers, as if that layer were a flat movie screen. This is why if you apply Invig to an AE layer, that layer has to stay 2D to maintain the illusion.

Otherwise you’d be moving around a flat movie screen, no?

I was a young photo assistant at the time, standing in for a portrait of a columnist/birdwatcher shot in a small wildlife sanctuary by Toronto’s waterfront. The duck was stuffed and clamped to a C-stand.

Sorry to spoil the illusion, Dave. 🙂

my company just purchased Invigorator classic based on my suggestion because they wanted to do 3d text. They want to be able to fly around the text and it be totally 3d, are you guys saying Invigorator won’t do this? you’ve got me worried now X_X

Yes, you can fly around quite nicely, but not by making the AE layer “3D” in the AE-3D sense. You have to either use the Invig camera (or set Invig to use AE’s camera — if it does that) but the layer that has had Invig applied has to stay “2D”, with AE’s little cube button unchecked.

It’s a formality: the Invig layer is not like a normal 3D layer.

For more info, check the Zaxwerks forum.

Caveat: I haven’t used Invig in years, having gone full 3D a while ago.

    Hi Charles,

Invigorator Classic will work nicely. As Steve already said, you need to tell invigorator to use the AE camera.

If your company can afford it I would suggest that you upgrade to the pro version. Besides the ability of importing 3D objects etc… you will be able to track an AE 3d layer.
This last feature will tremendously help animating in unison both the Invigorator & AE 3D layers.

Here is an example of an Invigorator 3D object tracking an AE 3D layer:

The animation is part of a new tutorial coming out soon here at the Cow.

    Salut.

For simple animations of 3D objects, consider using a Photoshop 3D object layer. Basically, you can import a 3D object into Photoshop and then bring the PSD into After Effects and treat it like a real 3D object. It doesn’t work for really complex things, but it certainly works for the kind of thing that you described.

AE’s shatter supports 3-D text and you can use AE’s camera to spin it all around without it breaking. You can even leave the text layer 3-D and 3-D liquify it!

    Here’s a quick example.

Also, you can do some crazy 3-D stuff with
    Photoshop CS4 Extended

As suggested before … go with the Zaxwerks.

I was just on their website and there is a way to have the 3D look follow the Camera you create. They have a tutorial on their website.

3D Serpentine … check it out.

Serpentine is nice, but you can also create very detailed 3-D objects, like for instance, folded aluminum without any plugins. Anything you can do to shape layers, pretty much.
