I notice that AFX has some kind of steroscopic 3D effect. Can a person really make a 3D movie with AFX. Do they look good and where can one find any tutorials on that? Has anyone done them before?

Well if by 3d movies you mean 3d animation, then no , after effects is not capable of anything that is of the “modeling animation” or anything like that, Pro Invigorator is a plug in that allows for some 3d modeling, but still your not gonna get anything extremely intense with after effects. You can turn layers on 3d switches and rotate them in 3d space but you can not build anthing with polygons or sub-d surfaces in after effects. Hope this has been some sort of help to your question.

I guess I should clarify. What I meant is making 3d movies where the viewer is supposed to wear the glasses to things popping out the screen. Often like what we see at the IMAX theatre.

I’ve made some pretty neat 3d animations that required the glasses. I played around with it a lot a couple summers ago. I’m looking at AE 7.0 it doesn’t seem to have the effect anymore. It was pretty self explanitary though. Just use two camara angles. Sorry, I can’t remember if there were any tricks. I wish I had more details for ya.

haha, well dont I feel stupid, as far as i know for that theres two types of that effect i think, one is for the split channel with the crappy red and blue glasses which can be done, (might want to check the manual online) and as for the imax theatre glasses, Im not sure how they do that one, there was an interesting article in the local newspaper about how they do it but I was to lazy to read it, i’ll check and see what I can find out

I haven’t seen any tutorials on it but I explored it once upon a time. I do believe it will output the red/blue glasses stereoscopic image. You’ll need two identical cameras with identical lenses and lens settings. Film a scene with the camera as close together as possible (you’re shooting for the distance between one’s eyes) Do some searches for anaglyphs. I know there’s some free software that will do it, if After Effects won’t. I think a friend of mine actually shot some anaglyphic footage and did the AE thing but I never saw how it turned out.

The IMAX kind of stereoscopy involves two video sources being projected simultaneously with different polarization. I know nothing about it (and my description is probably inaccurate)

    Good luck!

viusit the adobe.com after effects forum and search for 3d and anaglyph (that’s the tech term for red/blue glasses effect).

Some interesting work has been posted.

AE can be used as the output engine to create filed-shutter glasses stereo files and polarized files but it will NOT create the footage. However, you can, within AE’s silly 2.5D world, create rooms and environments and fly a pair of inter-occular cameras through the scene. You can only render one camera at a time, though.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”
