I am trying to create a motion path in 3D space, basically an ellipse that a layer would follow into positive z-space and back again, such as an object rotating around someone/thing located at 0 z-depth.

    This is what I did:

Created a solid, made it 3D.
Drew an elliptical open path on it.
    Rotated solid’s x-axis 90 degrees
Switched to top view, solid and path visible just fine
Copied mask path data to clipboard
Pasted clipboard data to position property of another 3D layer

Result: the pasted path loses its 3D aspect

This works fine in 2D space, but not in 3D.

All suggestions, hints, etc. much appreciated!

Try creating the elliptical mask, copying the path data out, pasting it into the position data of a 3D solid, then parenting that solid to a 3D Null located at the center of the ellipse and rotating the Null 90° on the X axis.

Mask path data is always 2D. You need to convert it to a motion path before rotating into 3 dimensional space.
