3D Motion Graphics in after Effects.

Hello, I’m new here. I’ve been lurking around for a few years and this forum has helped me greatly, however there was one answer I could not find.

I want to create motion infographics to explain the history of communication and I really like this style:

Now what I would like to do is create 3D objects simaler to the phones/computers on here.

I know how to make a simple 3D cube butI wouldn’t know where to start to make something more like the phones in this animation. I want mine to be able to rotate 360.

I would like to make them in illustrator but I’m not sure that is possible for 3d work.

Is there other programs that I should use alongside AE?

I guess it would be a 3D vector perhaps?

Yes — a 3D application like C4D, Lightwave, Maya, or Blender. The style you see here can be created with cel (or toon) shading and an isometric camera.

You may also want to look into Zaxwerks Invigorator Pro. It’s a great 3d plugin for AE that enables you to bring in 3d objects, link them to 3d layers in AE for easy animation, texture and light them. For a cartoon style look you can check out ToonIt from Red Giant.
You can find plenty of free or low priced 3d models on the web for what you need.

The isometric (no perspective) camera makes this a challenge for solving in AE or with Invigorator.

You’d have to simulate isometry by using a camera with a ponderously huge zoom value, placed ponderously far away from the scene.

You could actually do it with Photoshop Extended but it wouldn’t be ideal. Photoshop sucks at 3D, but you could work on your model in PS and then import it into AE as a PS Live comp. It would be a headache to make it work like you want it, but I thought I would throw out a potentially free option for the short term.

You couldn’t do every 3D animation in the video, but things like rotating objects could be done.

Those look more like 2D isometric drawings to me – something easily done in Illustrator.
