    Hi,

I hope someone can help me answer this question as I’ve been googling it for over an hour with very little helpful response. I am wondering if it is possible to preserve the 3D effect created in Illustrator so that it appears as a 3D object in After Effects?

I know that a guy I used to work with created an object in illustrator which was then animated..but I was unsure whether he used after effects or Cinema 4D (or something similar).

    Please, please help!

    Thanks,

    Paul

Illustrator does not have 3D space so tell us what you mean by “3D effect.” but the answer is no, you wil lneed to recreate the illusion of 3D (whatever you mean buy that) by applying effects such as drop shadows or bevels or fades in AE.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

Sorry, I realise I probably wasn’t being as clear as I could have been.

Basically I want to create (for example) a cube in illustrator and then rotate it in after effects. I’m starting to think this isn’t possible and I will need to get Cinema 4D instead.

Why would you not just create the cube in AE to begin with?

If you use the 3D extrusions/revolve filters in Illustrator, you have to export it as a flattened version (in other words, you can’t fly around it like a 3D object).

Is the object more complex than a simple cube? If not, either make it from 3D layers in AE manually or make it with the a 3D assistant box creator, then drop that in a new comp and turn on the collapse transformations. Then it is “3D” completely.

if it is just a simple cube that you are after, there is a cool little script that you can grab
    https://www.nabscripts.com/Downloads/downloads_en_1.php?id=7

make the side up in illustrator then run the script on that layer and a couple of options and BINGO

    hope this helps!
