OK, so I want to model a futuristic weapon/gun in Cinema 4D and film a real life character moving with the weapon ie. walking holding the weapon with both hands from a side view and then turning towards the camera with the weapon.

But where do I start so that I can get the movement to match the footage and also be able to key out the areas on the weapon where the hands hold the weapon?

I really do love good design – https://www.splurj.com

First you’ll need some kind of 3D tracking software like Syntheyes or Boujou. Then you can bring the tracking info. into Cinema and use it to drive the movement and rotation of the gun. As far as occlusion goes, I would think good old fashion rotoscoping would be the way to go.
