Help please. I’m at my wits end. I have a fairly complex comp and I’m on a deadline but can’t figure out what’s wrong.

The effect I’m trying to do is this: I have 5 PSDs that I cut into 10 pieces each. I pulled them into AE as a cropped comp, made them 3D and mucked with their Z position, Orientation and Scale so that they only appear to form the original psd from one perspective. The idea is that I would place the 5 pics in a circle around a centered null object and then orbit the camera around the null so that when rendered it would look like a jumbled mess of pieces spinning by until it slowed down to that perfect perspective that allows you to see the parts as a whole complete picture.

The problem I’m having is that even though some layers are clearly in the background and behind other layers, they are appearing in front of the foreground layers. No amount of Z space positioning will get them to disappear behind the foreground images.

I’ve never had this kind of problem before but it’s certainly possible that there’s something I’m over-looking. Is there anything that would force a 3D layer to remain on top of another, or allow it to ignore it’s Z position?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Make sure you don’t have any 2d layers between your 3d layers and that the layers are touching. Also try to turn off layers to find out which one might be causing the incorrect render order. Of course you want to be using the advanced 3d renderer in the comp settings.

    Good Luck,

I did have some 2d Null layers that I was using as a divider between sections. Could that have been causing my problems?

Possibly. Try shutting them off and see if that fixes the render order.

While I may be slightly misinterpreting what you’re going for, you can always add an adjustment layer (or other 2D layer) between your 3D layers to help force the render order. Sometimes AE just isn’t smart enough to do what seems logical, so you have to trick it…
