I’m having a weird masking issue (may be a bug) in AE 7.0.1 when I do the following:

    – Create a 3D layer of any kind (I used a solid in this example)
    – Pre Comp that layer
    – In the main timeline, turn the prev. pre-comped layer into a 3D layer again and turn on ‘Collapse Transformations’
    – Then mask that layer with a 2D layer (I’ve used a transparent 45 degree pattern here)
    – If you put another 3D layer behind this pattern, the masked layer acts as if part of is behind the layer even though it isn’t.

Note: This bug is fully reproduceable and I can provide AEP files if necessary.

I’d love to take a look at an .aep if you can provide one. I thought I understood what you were talking about until I saw the .mov, now my interest is piqued =)

Yeah I know. It’s a very strange problem. Seems like a bug to me.

That is strange… But, I found a way to make it work. Move the track matte into the pre-comp that you want matted and matte the layer there. The track matte will retain its 2D quality even in the final comp.

Yes, that would work but only in a situation where the Pre-Comp only contained 1 layer. My REAL file contains many more layers and so I need to Pre-Comp the layers to mask the whole pre-comp as one.

I opened the simple file in the CS3 beta and the bug doesn’t seem to be present but I’m going to have a look at the Large file now and see how it looks.
