3d layer bending/distortion
Posted by Ben Lunden on July 18, 2008 at 11:11 amHi,
I was wondering if there was a way to bend or distort a layer in 3D space in AE. For example, I want to bend a layer so that when viewed from the side, the actual layer is shaped like a curve. Any ideas? Thanks.Jeremy Fabiano replied 17 years, 10 months ago 5 Members · 5 Replies -

July 18, 2008 at 3:44 pmThere is a plug-in called Free Form FX (or something like that)that will do this. I don’t have the link with me, but if you google it you should be able to find it.
Unfortunately, you can’t “bend” stuff like that in 3d without a plug-in.

July 19, 2008 at 6:29 amHi Ben,
Thad is right. It’s a no can do in AE yet. Your best bet would be to us e Zaxwerks software. Invigorator/proanimator as well as 3D warps would easily do the trick.
Salut.

July 19, 2008 at 6:38 ambending from the side like a thick rectangle could still be done without plugins. You could make 6 layers rotated and oriented into a card board box shape and parent them all to a null so just move the null like a primitive 3-d object. but you’d have some funky manipulating if you change it into an arch. the arc will make parts need to be longer so some layers would have to grow to fill up the missing space. That is why people buy invigorator, so they stay sane. but hey, we all started with AE 3.0 or something; so, is ingenuity a pasttime? hehe.

Not at all dude! It’s just the inflation and tight deadlines;-) LOL!

July 19, 2008 at 1:03 pmUm.. I haven’t done this before, but there’s talk about using the cc cylinder and mapping an image/layer onto it.. I don’t know how to do it, but I’ve seen it somewhere on here before…
Hope it helps somehow..
