3D ideas for Orca Project – Pacific NW
Hi folks. I do video and have been on CCow for a while, but wanted to reach out to the community for this one. I’ve been involved in helping out the Port Townsend Marine Science Center with their Orca project https://www.ptmsc.org/orca_project.html
For their exhibit, they are thinking of how to possibly use 3D to bring the Orca skeleton to life, and wanted to reach out and see if any of you might have 3D camera gear yet, and want to chat about how to use it to really take this exhibit to the next level. The other possibility is whether some of you efx folks might have ideas about how to approach this from an animated POV without breaking the bank. I have no experience in 3D yet, so I am only sending this to see if some of you with experience might be interested.
Here’s what the project manager described to me:
The videos would show breaching, diving, resting, spyhopping, exhaling …the motions we usually see. Then we wondered whether there might be a way to animate the skeleton – virtually – as the animal makes these motions. In other words, bringing the skeleton to life in a more 3-D way. I’m not sure whether this requires the type of virtual reality helmets I’ve seen in use … or just goggles … or something else. The closer the image is to life-size, the more powerful and exciting it would be. Having an image that was skeleton + muscles would be even better, since we’d see the bulk of the orca.
The Orca project is well underway at this point, and if you have ideas, you can either contact me off list (if you had technical questions about their project) or go directly to the project manager, Libby who’s email is CommSci AT Olympus.net who is the person you would be working directly with.
Budget is obviously pretty tiny, but I think they want to see what someone might feel like doing to help them out on this. Given that this is one of the first projects of it’s kind anywhere in the world, many researchers have been volunteering their specialties to be part of the project. It could certainly be a showcase project for someone, like a student or class.
Here’s hoping that one of you have an idea to share with them about how you could help!
Alf
