Hi I’m really starting to get into 3D video. What I’m wondering is, can 3D be done from footage shot from only 1 camera? I heard that it can be done I just need to layer the same footage and convert it using the 3D presets. Can this be done? and please instruct me how to do it correctly as I said I’m just starting out so I’m still getting somewhat confused by the presets etc. Also what is the proper way to render for YouTube viewing?

I really appreciate any help you can give me, you guys are awesome
    Thanks
    Paul

This technique was used on a Stupor Bowl ad about 15-years ago. By placing a neutral-gray filter over one eye you delay the brain from registering motion by a millisecond or so, so motion appears to have 3D depth. (I think it was Coke and they were putting millions of these special glasses in cartons of Cocke products leading up to the Stupor Bowl. The ad featured a lot of slow dolly moves, and it did look like 3D).

You can try it yourself using an old pair of lightly-tinted sunglasses. Knock out one eye of the glasses and watch some motion on your 2D TV. Your brain *will* see 3D. (Very-dark or heavy tinted glasses won’t work as well).

Now, extrapolating that effect to a single-camera shoot… I would imagine that you could duplicate the illusion by delaying one eye by a single frame. Might be fun to try.

It can be done… but it doesn’t look so great. I have a 3D tv and it has a “simulation” setting where it takes 2D and simulates 3D. It doesn’t look so great. I have also watched a few 2D converted movies (Clash Of The Titans for example) and again… it doesn’t look so great.

IMO… for the rather ‘fake’ look you will achieve, it’s not really worth the effort.

Now the REAL 3D is quite spectacular to watch with today’s technology and today’s hardware… and I would suggest that if you really want to get into it… then get the proper camera. I think the Panasonic 3D cam is selling for $750 (or there abouts) and the new and upcoming sony 3D cam (the one I’m looking at snapping up) is about $1400 and comes out in April.

Thanks for the advice. However I just really cant afford to purchase more equipment right now, if I edit using the stero3D in vegas do I just layer, put one clip on the bottom and another on top and then do the pairing option? or is there more too it then that?
