One of our graphic designers used the “New Mesh from Layer” 3D effect in photoshop to extrude an image based on the colors of that image as shown in the image below. I am wanting to do the same thing in after effects so I can animate it extruding. Is there anyway I can easily do this?

    Thanks in advance!

You’ll need something that could take a height map from luma. You could get that to some extent with Trapcode’s Form.

Or go for a 3d ap, like cinema 4d that does that easily.

After Effects includes Cinema 4D Lite, so you could use an image on a plane and use displacement in the material to get that sort of effect.

If you’ve never used Cinema 4D before, this course is a good way to get up on the basics of using the Lite version that comes with After Effects: https://www.cineversity.com/vidplaylist/cinema_4d_lite_reference/cinema_4d_lite_reference_series_introduction
