I’m working on creating some DVD assets for a client. I have an Illustrator file of an outline/silhouette of the United States that I need to rotate in 3d space, then fly over. I’m wondering if there is a way to do some kind of 3D extrude to the image, so that as it rotates and lays flat, it still gives the illusion of depth and is still visible. I know that I could create 100 layers and parent them together, but I’m hoping that, given the ever-increasing 3D capabilities of AE, there will be a simpler way to accomplish this. Any ideas?

i might not have explained what i’m after very well, so i will attempt to clarify.

Imagine you have text in 3d space…you want to animate the camera to fly around that text. Normally, when the camera is at a 90 degree angle to the text, the text will disappear, as it is only 1 pixel deep. Is there a way to extrude that text to be, say, 100 pixels deep without creating 100 layers and positioning each one in z space individually? If there is not a way to do this, is there an expression that might save me some time?

You might want to look at this, it’s a 0.1 pixel offset and lets you get to almost 1/2 a degree of 90 before you start to see-thru the layers. But you’d need 100 layers to make a 10 pixel this text. It also helps to have the tween layers a different color or shade. Shatter might be best for you.

Personally, I’m not a big fan of Shatter for this purpose because you can’t move or rotate the shattered object (just the camera), which can be a problem at times.

You may want to look at “3D layer”, which was carried by Digital Anarchy, but now handled by Conoa. https://conoa.com/

Thanks to all who posted. I’m trying all of these solutions to see which works best for my purposes. God bless Creative Cow!
