    When I create a camera
then create a solid and add say Particle World to the “plane’
and then set this layer to 3D then rotate the camera in space,
it appears that the particle system is bound to the 2D plane in 3D space.

Am I missing something, or are there any plugins like trapcode that
actually emit particles in 3D space.

Very new to after effects so this could be a newbie mistake.
But this simply isn’t the case with particles and 3ds Max that I know.

    Thanks

No, there are no particle emitters that create geometry in Ae’s 3D space.

Ae’s particle systems (both the bundled and third-party systems) render to their own 2D layers. However, most can react to comp cameras and lights, rendering that 3D view within the plugin, so integration into a full 3D scene is possible with clever compositing.
