I am not sure what the technique is called. Perhaps its some sort of Compositing done. I am speaking how do you make a picture look 3 dimensional? I have been seeing it a lot lately in various things on TV and in movies. The latest sighting was in the Lebron James “More Than A Game” movie trailer. Since it was the last place I saw this effect, I added it below. I am sure some of the images might have been photoshopped or if it came from footage, a garbage matte may have been used and keyframed to move. I included a link to the trailer to show what I am talking about. The shot around 1:05 has a 3D kinda of look to it. The other shots look matted or photoshop may have been used. Am I right in my assumption or could I be confusing this with something else? I just want to know how to do it…I think its a cool effect.

THis was first employed on the feature documentary THE KID STAYS IN THE PICTURE, and it has been called the “KID STAYS IN THE PICTURE” effect.

Here’s a great tutorial from Digital Juice:

It’s know as the “Kid Stays in the Picture” effect because it was used so very extensively in the documentary of the same name about film producer Robert Evans. The technique involves rotoscoping people and foreground elements and animating them in 3D space in against a background plate.

There was a dedicated app floating around that helped to automate the process somewhat, but it was not perfect. Compositing apps such as Combustion, Shake, etc. make it a whole lot easier.

Yeah, that and it helps to be 2 hours ahead of you. Currently in Dallas. I had more time to wake up.

[Shane Ross] “Currently in Dallas. I had more time to wake up. “

    That splains it…

Ah Dallas, nice small town there… NOT!!! Hope you don’t have to drive across town ever while you’re there. Distances there make our beloved L.A. seem like Munchkin Land.

I call it “2-and-a-half-D” or “2.5D” because it simulates a 3-d scene with flat 2-d art in a 3-d space.

If you have not seen “The Kid Stays” yet, you owe it to yourself to do so, it lives up tot he hype and is just rip-roaring good story telling to boot. The director of that film is one of the guys doing those specisl ESPN sports documentaries this month.

any idea what that might have been called?

I call it (my invention) .. the “Stendhal Effect” from the Stendhal syndrome where the patient reports a sort of “entering the picture” sensation. 🙂
I’ve been doing it for some time with some success…

Cut out “layers” in PS thinking as they were actual 3d layers (things are on the same layer if they are at the same distance)

Rebuild what would be under the layer if you switch it off

Position in After FX in a 3D layer environnement

Animate moving the camera sideways and in

Guys, things have totally changed with Digieffects’ Camera Mapping plug-in which solves problems with parallax and other issues which takes away from a more realistic camera move. I use it in After Effects.
