3D Cards – Gaming Cards vs. Pro Cards…
Not sure if this is the best place for this question, but since C4D is my 3D app of choice I thought I’d try here.
I have both a mac and a PC – the mac has been my production machine for a few years, and is an aging Power Mac G5 with a Radeon x800XT.
My PC is really more of a gaming rig with a Core 2 Duo (running at 3.2 Ghz) and an 8800GTS.
Now I’ve read before that using a gaming card for 3D animation isn’t a great idea, as the drivers are optimized for games and not 3d modeling.
That makes sense, but the two GPU companies seem to have different product lines that throw this argument out… I’ve seen many workstations – both PC and Mac – that offer the ATI Radeon x1900 as the GPU – which I always thought was a gaming card. Nvidia had their Quadro series, which seems to be much higher priced than their gaming cards (or ATIs 1900).
Both the Radeon x1900 and my Nvidia 8800 are in the same general price range, FYI.
So what’s the deal? My mac is rock solid but has been feeling slower lately. My PC is newer and faster (built it myself) but I’ve read about not using gaming cards.
So what do you experts think? Would it be worth it to get C4D for Windows and use it on my more powerful graphics hardware? Or should I stick with the older, but solid, G5 with x800? Does that gaming comment have any merit? Thanks.
Scott
