I’m making a comp with a 3D room in which my camera starts at the back of the room and backs towards the front of the room, panning and holding in front of signs for a moment during its journey. The problem is that when I add keyframes telling the camera to hold at a certain point, the camera will instead zoom out until halfway between the two keyframes, them zoom back in to the keyframes before continuing on its backwards journey.

Basically, the camera is moving in 3D space even when there is no change at all between two keyframes. I have made sure that all keyframes are linear. What am I missing?

    Thanks a bunch,

    Brandon

make sure your temporal AND spacial keyframe interpolation is set to linear.

How about the POI? It sounds silly but it might be something like that if it´s not the interpolation.

Maybe the point of interest (of the camera) animation keyframes are not holding along with the camera keyframes. So it keeos going and then the camera runs after it.

I might be talking a lot o cow s**t, but it came to my mind.

    Good luck anyways.

    Cheers.

don’t you need to set another keyframe for when you want the motion to start back up though? I’ve used hold keyframes a few times, and they do just that… hold the position until the next keyframe. This can cause jumpy animation, which is what I was going for last time I used them, or be used for other effects… but if you toggle a hold keyframe, you’d have to have another keyframe to move from to the next, or else the hold keyframe will hold the camera in the same place until the timeline gets to the next keyframe with a different position.

    like this

    K———-H———-K

the hold keyframe will cause the position to “jump” when you reach the next keyframe

    vs.

    K———-H–K——-K

which as long as the next non-hold keyframe is the same position as the hold keyframe is, you’ll get smooth motion from K to K.

    Or am I way off?

good to know. I guess it has been a long while since I needed a hold keyframe… typically I don’t use camera moves in AE, but I’m starting to use the camera more. This will help.

    thanks.

Lots has changed since AE 4.1 🙂 I pretty much missed AE5 and AE 7.

Went from 3.1 to 4.x to 6.5 to CS3. I still have old behaviors of stuff stuck in my head and old ways of doing things. I’m upgrading my brain this year so I can better use AE.

I’ve tried in the past to learn Javascript, to no avail. Maybe now that I have a real reason to, I’ll get a good book on it, and adapt what I learn to use with After Effects.

Wedge that in with all the other stuff to learn about After Effects (it never ends), plus trying to learn at least one decent Mac 3D program, get better at Final Cut Pro, get real work done, and have a life outside of work… yeah.

That, and find a new job.
