    Hi all,

I have an issue whereby when I move in for a close up of an object using the 3D camera, the object gets soft and blurred, like when you scale something up to 200% or more.

The actual scale of the object is only 50% and I’m working in a 1280×720 workspace. I’ve shown a wideshot of the scene and am now cutting to a close up of the primary object but no matter how I adjust the focus on the camera, the object remains soft.

Is there a trick to doing a close up shot of something, yet retaining sharpness on the image? It’s a photoshop element I created with an image size of 750×1200 at 72dpi. I’ve actually had this issue pop up before and we solved it by simply moving the camera back, but I really need to be in close for this shot.

    Any suggestions?

If it’s a bitmap, it’s going to look pixelated if your camera is too close to the layer. A 3D layer’s REAL scale value is dependent on it’s Z-position and scale and the camera’s Z-position and zoom settings. That is why you solved a similar issue previously by bringing the camera further back.

    Thanks Roland!

    It’s not a bitmap image, it’s a 72dpi photoshop file I created.

A local AE guru just explained it to me this morning that even though the scale for the layer is set to 50%, once the camera moves in close enough to take the image beyond it’s normal 100% size, it will start to go soft like I was scaling it up. I thought the camera prevented this from happening but he suggested that I start making my photoshop images even higher resolution to allow for the real closeups we want to get in our animations.
