Howdy all. Pretty new to AE and I’m looking for some help with the camera. I purchased Total Training’s CS3 bundle when I purchased CS3 and have gone through all of the Essentials training for AE. I’ve improved my knowledge a ton but, of course, Essentials doesn’t cover the 3D camera and I haven’t purchased the Advanced yet. I’m really not looking for any specific assistance…my question is more a general one. What is the best way to learn the camera rather than just playing around with it….which I have done….alot. I have learned quite a bit but still get funky results when I start to move it in more than just the very basic ways.

Are there any tutorials out there that specifically deal with learning to use the camera? Is the Total Training Advanced training worth the money for learning the camera? Are there any other training tools (free or not) that specifically deal with camera?

Thanks….I’ve learned a lot from you guys by just reading what you all have to say. Thanks in advance!

What you want to do is learn how to parent the camera to a null object.
    Then move the null.
There are several tutorials here and on other AE support sites that use this technique.
Open the online AE help system and carefully read the sections on null objects, parenting, camera’s point of interest, and how to pickwhip the POI to the null’s position in 3D space.

Example: How would you create a 3D spiral path for a camera to follow, say, as it flies around and pedestals up a cube? Supremely difficult. Put a camera into the scene so it is looking down at the cube. Put a null at the center of the cube and parent the camera’s POI to it. Now, as you slowly spin the null, the camera swoops around the cube. If you orient the null to tilt down, the camera will swoop below the cube but will always be pointing at the null in the center of the cube.

It’s really easy once you’ve got the basics but the basics are not so easy.
