3D book with different image for the back of the front cover?
Posted by David Del on April 3, 2009 at 12:17 amI am creating a book in 3D. I have the cover open and the pages inside show up. The challenge I am having is this – when I open the front cover, the back of the front cover is just a reverse image. Is there a way around this?

April 3, 2009 at 2:45 amYou need a separate layer for the reverse side of the Book. You should read this tutorial that explains the expression you need to use:
https://www.motionscript.com/design-guide/invisible-facing-away.html
Basically, you need to give an expression to the opacity of each layer so its not visible when facing away from the camera:
if (toCompVec([0, 0, 1])[2] > 0 ) value else 0

April 3, 2009 at 12:23 pmI don’t know much about expressions, but what I did was to put the back side of the page/cover 1 pixel deeper in Z space. Then I parented the back side to the front side. Now when I turn the front page, the back page moves with it.
While it doesn’t show the back side of the pages very much, I used this technique to create this video…

April 3, 2009 at 10:04 pmI tried parenting the front and the back cover, but found when I turned the cover over, the back would sometimes show through at certain points of its turn, and then not at others. I had to manually keyframe it to work.
